Staff Spotlight: Sara Gahan - school psychologist at Prescott and Wysong
February 12, 2026
Every week, we shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! This week, meet Sara Gahan, school psychologist at Prescott and Wysong elementary schools.
“Sara is a school psychologist for the district and works at Wysong and Prescott. Managing two large buildings is not easy, but she does so with positivity, collaboration and kindness that is noticed by colleagues. Sara wants to do what is best for students, works with colleagues to make sure she has accurate information, and in a positive way shares information with families regarding strengths and needs of their child. We appreciate Sara and her hard work to support students and staff at both buildings.” - Makaela Johnson, special education coordinator
In a few sentences, briefly describe your role at LPS.
I am a school psychologist at LPS, and I work at both Prescott and Wysong elementary schools. My role is highly collaborative. I partner with students, staff and families to support student success! Every day looks different for me, which is something that I love about my role. I typically spend my days conducting testing for special education evaluations, writing behavior assessments, consulting with staff and advocating for my students.
How long have you worked for LPS?
This is my third year working for LPS.
What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?
During graduate school, I completed my practicum experience in LPS. I learned so much from my practicum supervisor, and I knew that I would be supported and connected with other school psychologists as I began my career. I love the community in Lincoln, and I chose this role to make a positive impact here.
What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
My favorite part of working at LPS is the kids! I often find myself reflecting on my interactions with students and realizing how much they have to teach us. My goal is to form a personal connection with every student I work with because I learn so much from them. I couldn't do my job without them!
Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?
I grew up in Gretna, Neb., and attended Gretna Public Schools!
What path did you take after completing your formal education?
I attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for both my undergraduate degree in psychology and my graduate degree in educational psychology. I changed my mind frequently during my undergraduate years, taking classes in everything from dance to organic chemistry before discovering my passion for psychology during my senior year. I was thrilled to finish my graduate program with an internship at LPS.
What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?
My favorite part of the Lincoln community is the small-town feel. I am always amazed by how it feels like everyone knows each other here! Outside of work, I enjoy exploring the parks and trails in Lincoln, and I like to share in community events that take place in those spaces.
What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively?
I enjoyed reading the Magic Tree House books as a kid!
Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life.
So many teachers come to my mind when I reflect on my educational journey—there's not just one who made an impact on me.
