Staff Spotlight: Mike Boshart - skilled and technical sciences teacher at LNE

May 9, 2025

Every week, we’ll shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! Get to know the wonderful people making a positive impact across various areas within LPS. This week, meet Mike Boshart, skilled and technical sciences teacher at Lincoln Northeast High School.

“Mike has come out of retirement at least three (if not four times) to return to teaching and fill in positions that are needed for our district. I hired Mike after he had retired from LPS (and maybe OPS), to come teach Middle School ITE (industrial technology education) at Lefler. Since then, he has retired and taught at Goodrich, retired again, and is now back teaching at LNE! Mike is such a learner, is an incredibly positive colleague, and truly enjoys working with students in LPS!” - Jess Fries, director of secondary education.

How long have you worked for LPS?
Fourteen years at Lincoln Northeast, five years at Lefler Middle School, half a year at Goodrich and almost another whole year at Lincoln Northeast.

What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?
Teaching for Lincoln Public Schools was a lifelong goal. I finally reached that after coaching and teaching for my first 17 years at several other districts. After getting my degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, I have always had the highest respect for LPS and consider it the best district in the state.

What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
I have learned from the best administrators and mentor teachers at every school I have taught in. It seems like each one has had something special that motivated me in different ways. LPS does a great job of putting the best people in the right positions. LPS is always looking for ways to improve facilities and programs for students. I have loved being a part of that and helping contribute in some way. I have always tried to leave a school with something a little nicer than when I got there.

Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?
I grew up and graduated from Milford High School. Milford is the home of Southeast Community College. My dad worked there and I would go hang out there during summers. It made me a huge believer in the trades industry and how important they are.

What path did you take after completing your formal education?
After getting my bachelor’s degree from UNL, there were no jobs available at LPS. My advisor at UNL, Neil Edmunds, helped me get a job at Wausa, which is where he started his career. After three years at Wausa, I went back to UNL as a graduate assistant for Dr. Edmunds. After a year and a half, I had my master’s degree in career education. At the time, schools were not wanting to pay for teachers with master’s degrees. I was very close to following Dr. Edmunds to the University of Missouri for my Ph.D., but I got cold feet and was fortunate to land another high school teaching/coaching position.

What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?
It must be Lincoln Public Schools since I have come out of retirement three or four times to keep teaching. I have met so many special people through LPS and consider many of them lifelong friends. Lincoln has great opportunities to get outside, which is where I enjoy most of my time. And of course the HUSKERS!!

What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively?
Maybe the "The Little House On The Prairie" series, mainly because it was read to us daily in the fourth grade. I have become a much more consistent reader as an adult. "This Tender Land" and a huge David Baldacci fan.

Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life.
All of my elementary and junior high teachers shaped me. Dr. Neil Edmunds for all his support in helping me in this career path. And all of you in LPS who have been there when I needed impacting! Thank you all!
